OCEAN FABRIC SKETCHES (2013-2020)   Cotton fabrics, batting, and thread. Machine and hand sewn.

Fabric sketches as preparatory studies for possible larger works, and independent pieces in their own right. I use quilting stitches to delineate ocean currents, and color differences to show depth, or (in some cases) light and shadow. Edges are purposefully left raw, with batting visible and fabric fraying, in order to emphasize the loose ‘sketch’ nature of the work. In all of the pieces, the ocean is foregrounded and shown as an individual entity, instead of viewed as a backdrop or negative space between landforms.
